Marvellous Madrid.

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

We stayed at the Alexandra Hotel on our recent visit to Madrid, Spain, and had a wonderful time. The hotel is ideally situated right near the Grand Via, 2 metro stations and plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. There is a 24 hour store just next door so you never need worry about running out of anything. We took the Madrid Tour from right outside the hotel and found this fascinating and an excellent way to discover the city, it gave us good ideas about other things we wanted to see in more detail. We also went on the Real Madrid stadium tour - well worth it - it is absolutely huge!! Just jump on the metro and head for the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium (drk blue line, L10) easy, and you don’t need to book in advance, just turn up and grab a tour booklet, spend as long as you like in there!

Shopping is, of course, out of this world in Madrid!! There are hundreds of designer boutiques that I hardly dared look in the window as the prices were that high!! But there are plenty of shops for my kind of budget too and the Chueca area, just 5 mins from Grand Via is excellent for shoes!! For real bohemian style - look for the Feuncarral indoor market…so cool…..The El Rastro Sunday market is also not to be missed, if you can fit in a visit then do…but make sure you leave a few hours to get round it! I’d certainly recommend the Alexandra Hotel for a city break to Madrid.

Our Romantic Weekend

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

My wonderful fiance David booked us a surprise valentine weekend holiday in London. When we got there i though we’d just be going shopping and sightseeing during the day and then having a meal in a lovely restaurant in the evening and boy was i wrong. On the Friday night David booked tickets to see We Will Rock You and it was amazing, the signing and dancing was really good. Id never been to a show before and had such a good time at the Dominion Theatre. The best bit of my weekend in London had to be the London Eye.

David had booked us a private capsule for the evening of valentines day. Inside our private capsule was a bottle of champagne and a box of choccies. The views over London are stunning, Buckingham Palace and St Paul’s Cathedral look amazing when your so high up. When we reached the top David got down on one knee and asked me to marry him, i was so shocked and didn’t expect it at all, and of course i said yes. It was so romantic and i cant believe that he managed to keep it all a surprise as he’s not usually good at keeping surprises and the ring is perfect.

Irish adventure

Friday, February 6th, 2009

I recently went and stayed with friends in Fermoy, County Cork in Ireland for a close mutual friend’s wedding.  I was staying with one of my best friends Nick and his fiance Jen, who now live there which is where she is from originally.  They met in Jersey, which is where Nick is originally from and in fact where all three of us worked together at one point.  They live in a lovely rural area surrounded by endless fields and they have two gorgeous dogs who we walked every day when I were there.  I was only there for three full days, so we wanted to try and make the most of it.  Nick picked me up from Cork airport and we went straight into Cork for some breakfast.  Cork had a lovely feel to it and it was very clean and colourful, full of many traditional little cafes and restaurants.  The Cork accent is lovely - the locals sound like they’re singing when they speak!  Afterwards, we decided to go and have a blast on the go karts on what is said to be Ireland’s biggest track - Nick inexplicably managed to beat me again - I’m sure he has my kart rigged before we go!!!  A torential downpour deluged the track halfway through too which made things nice and interesting!  Afterwards, we went back to their cottage and met Jen and the dogs.  We went and took the dogs for a walk down by the river Blackwater and it was great… It was so very peaceful and picturesque there!

Cork at dusk...

After a quiet night in, chatting and listening to music, we woke up fresh to travel to the wedding which was in Kilkenny - a good hour and a half away, but after a mix up with the timings, we were left with about an hour to get there… Cue panic stations!!!  We probably should have had helmets on because of the speed we were driving at!  The roads weren’t the best either (single carriageway most of the way) and we kept getting stuck behind tractors and horse drawn carts… but we managed to make it just in the nick of time as the bride turned up at the church! Phew!!!  The bride was my ex-manageress from Jersey and good friend Marcella.  The wedding went well, although I was asked in advance if I would read a short prayer for the faithful at the alter, along with four or five other people which I obliged to do, yet it made me really nervous.  I was third in line, and after hearing two lovely, flowing female Irish accents it was my turn to project my not so soothing North-Eastern accent to all in the church!  It went okay though, so I needn’t have worried…

Castle Kilkenny

Castle Kilkenny

After a quick drink in the local (a local custom apparently!), it was off to the reception at a beautiful hotel in Kilkenny - we were staying just down the road at another nice hotel, although it wasn’t quite as grand as the hotel that the reception was at!  We had a beautiful meal and then enjoyed the night, which was filled with much dancing, laughter and of course drink!!!  We then retired to the hotel.  The next day, the weather was even hotter than the previous day which didn’t help the hangover, but we wanted to make the most of the time we had so we ventured into Kilkenny and looked around the shops, grabbed an ice cream and even went on an open top bus tour(!!!), which actually turned out to be really good!  We met up with the wedding party later on back at their local pub, The Shamrock Inn, in the remote village of Knockanore, where a local band that had played at the wedding were playing again.  It was a good laugh - Nick and I were in hysterics just chatting about random things outside and catching up!  Jen’s brother picked us up and took us back home, where we again chatted away for ages.  My flight was the next morning, and Nick drove me to the airport in good time and we said farewell.  It was a shame to be leaving because I’d had such a great time, but as they say all good things must come to an end!!!

Unforgettable Belfast

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

I have just returned from a long weekend in Belfast with my husband. We had such a good time as there’s so much to see and do and the shops are amazing. I now need another break just to recover. We booked a sightseeing tour of the city, I’m so glad we did that as we got to see the real Belfast our driver was just amazing and funny and didn’t mind answering any of our questions not matter how bazaar my husband made them. It was an unforgettable experience and very informative. I would recommend the city tour to anyone. The murals on walls and sides of houses are truly remarkable and at some points it just seem like your driving around a museum.

Giant Causeway

Giant Causeway

We also visited Giants Causeway on the coast of County Antrim which was truly spectacular.  The paths are quite narrow and at intervals small coaches pass ferrying people up and down the rocks for those who don’t fancy the walk up. The view along the walk, ing cliff route are awe inspiring, Ive never seen views like these before they where truly breathtaking. At the top is a tourist information office and a few shops while near the main entrance is a cafe. If your coming here by car the car park does charge you £5. The golden mile has lots of restaurants, cafes and bars along it. The irish bars are fantastic playing live music and can get very busy. We had such a good time and cant wait to go back.

Dublin Overnighter

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

I managed to get some cheap flights over to Dublin back in November to catch up with a few old mates I hadn’t seen in ages which was great.  Tom got the train up from Cork where he is now living and we both stayed with Mike in Dublin.  Dublin airport is massive now & the expansion plans will mean that its the third largest in Europe!  I was only there for one night so we decided to make the most of it by heading to the temple bar area in the heart of the city and even though it was a Monday night there was still a good atmosphere.  After going around a few of the bars, we settled on one that had offers on for bottled drinks, which was quite a relief as the other bars were expensive, not helped by the weak pound and the strong Euro - in fact that was the only down side to the trip, realising how expensive everything was there with the weak pound.  There was a nightclub downstairs in the bar, so we headed down there and danced the night away in Dublin!  The music was really good and it was great having a laugh with my mates.  After demolishing a fry-up the following morning to cure the hangover it was time to return to the airport.  A whistle-stop tour it was, but a very worthwhile one!!!

Magical Moulin Rouge

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Ive seen Moulin Rouge on DVD over a hundred times and still love it every time i watch it and had always dreamed of going to Paris to see the show. For our wedding anniversary my loving husband booked us a surprise weekend in Paris which was amazing. My husband did not tell me that he had booked us to go to the Moulin Rouge for dinner and to see the show.

Moulin Rouge

Moulin Rouge

When we pulled up outside i was speechless and shocked that he had kept this a secret from me but very very happy. The theatre is absolutely stunning and everything id hoped it would be. We where very impressed with the food and the service and the champagne was very nice. We shared our table with another couple from England and managed to get a table on the front row. But i really couldn’t wait for the show to start and when it did it was thrilling. The dancing and costumes where stunning and the set changes where incredible, you can see how much hard work goes in to making it a great evening. The acts in between the dancers where just as good as the main show with the ventriloquist and juggler interacting with the audience. We had such a great evening at the Moulin Rouge and would recommend anybody visiting Paris to see the show. The Moulin Rouge really did live up to my expectations, watching it on DVD will never be the same again.

Eggciting Edinburgh

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

I went to Edinburgh with my husband and daughter Izzy a few years ago. We decided to go at Easter as we both had the long weekend for Easter. We stayed at the Jury’s Inn Hotel which is not far from Waverley train station. Edinburgh is such a beautiful city as we where with our daughter our visit was geared towards what we could do with her. We went to the zoo, deep sea world and even did the Easter egg hunt in princes street gardens. The zoo was really good and we all enjoyed it but it does not have any elephants which my daughter was upset about.

On Sunday we headed to princess street gardens for the Easter egg hunt which Izzy was really excited about. It can get very muddy as your searching for the eggs so take your wellies if you ever go. Izzy loved it whenever she found a mini egg, there plenty for the kids with face painters and maypole dancing with plenty of loud music in the background. It does get very busy but its worth it to see the smiles on the children’s faces. We also had a guided tour of Edinburgh castle which was fantastic and really informative, when the tour was over you where allowed to wander around the castle on your own. edinburgh-castleThe castle has some great views over the city and at night its all lit up and looks so beautiful.  Were going back to Edinburgh this May without Izzy so we can see Edinburgh from an adult’s view.

Bonjour Paris!

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

My best friend and I decided we fancied a little break away on the continent & decided that going to Paris would be a good idea.  We didn’t have a particularly orthodox route of travel for our mini holiday, as at the time I lived down in Jersey, so my mate Scott flew over from England, from which we decided to drive over because I worked for a ferry company and received free travel dependant on availability so just needed to pay for the petrol & the toll roads.  It was around a 3 hour trip if memory serves me right from St Malo in Brittany (the ferry destination port) through to Paris on the toll roads, which although they are expensive are probably worth the money for a one off trip, as the roads & services are excellent and hassle free.  We travelled in style - a 1989 1.6 Toyota Corolla… purchased in Jersey for £50 (yes, really!)!!!  It was just the job though and reliably served us and was actually pretty comfortable!  We stayed at the Sapphire hotel, in Marne La Vallee, near Euro Disney, as it was one that I had stayed at about 6 years previous with my family & chose again as it has great, easy access into Euro Disney itself, as well as good access into Paris too.  I could definitely recommend the hotel because it has perfectly comfortable rooms, a bar with a pool table, a nice restaurant area and a cracking indoor pool.

Paris looks at its finest at night!

We decided to make the most of our short visit, so we headed to Paris on 2 of the 3 days and went to Euro Disney on the remaining day.  Once we got parked, the Paris metro system was top notch and so easy to use that we were constantly on it, hopping about the city.  We took a trip up the Eiffel Tower - well I made it to the 2nd level anyway, before my phobia of heights got the better of me!  Scott however, managed to make it right to the top!  Probably, my favourite part of Paris though is wandering down the Avenue des Champs-Elysees on a night time, when its all lit up with the light that give off a golden glow.  The Arc de Triomphe is a fantastic monument which sits at the head of the avenue and has wonderful scripts sculpted into the stone work.  From there, you meander down the avenue with world-famous shops either side of you.  Probably my favourite one was the Mercedes garage, where I could oogle at all the amazing cars with the aim of popping back to buy one of them someday, once i’ve scooped the jackpot on the lottery!

Space mountain at Euro Disney

Space mountain at Euro Disney

The trip wasn’t complete without a trip to Euro Disney as both myself and Scott are both big theme park lovers!  Space mountain is a great ride not to be missed… Its not just a roller-coaster - there’s an accompanying story to enjoy that goes with it as you’re whizzing around (if your eyes can still stay open!) - try and get a front row seat as you get the best view!  A lot of the rides are child orientated as you’d probably expect, however there’s enough to keep the adult thrill seekers happy too!  A long dip in the hotel was needed after that energetic day.  Overall, a super time was had by both us!
